Meet the Hawaii Tiki Bowl Coaches

Each of the coaches in the Hawaii Tiki Bowl coach at the collegiate level.  Below is a list of coaches who have been invited to coach in our event.

Bill Cronin – Georgetown College – Kentucky

BiBill Cronin Photoll Cronin has coached at Georgetown College in Kentucky for the past 19 years with a record of 170-43.  He is a member of the American Football Coaches Association Board of Directors.  He has also been a 7-Time conference Coach of the Year and won 2 National Championships.

Coach Cronin has led Georgetown University Tigers to be one of the nation's most respected and successful football programs at all levels.

We are very pleased Coach Cronin is joining us in Hawaii for Christmas of 2018.  He is a very well respected and connected coach who cares about his players.

Mike Van Diest – Carroll College – Montana

In over 19 years as heaMike Van Diest Picd coach at Carroll College, Mike Van Diest has led the Fighting Saints to six National Championships, 14 Frontier Conference Championships (including twelve straight titles from 2000-2011) for one of the most dominating runs in college football history. The Saints have posted a 186-30 record during the past fifteen seasons. This includes a Frontier Conference mark of 130-11 for an impressive winning percentage of 92%.

Mark Duda – Lackawanna College – Pennsylvania

Coach Mark Duda has been the Head Mark Duda PhotoFootball Coach at Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pennsylvania since 1993.  He has produced 315 Division I scholarship football players and 15 of his players have gone on the NFL.  He is 2nd among active football coaches in the NJCAA in wins.

During his career as an athlete he played for the University of Maryland where he still hold the record for sacks in a season.  Coach Duda also played 5 seasons in the NFL for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Coach Duda has coached with us in Hawaii for 3 years.

Mike Magistrelli – St. Ambrose University – Iowa

mike_magistrelli_111_mfbMike Magistrelli took the reins of the St. Ambrose Fighting Bees football program in 2007 and won the Mid-States Football Association Midwest League championship in back-to-back seasons in 2007 and 2008.

In his 11 years at the helm, Magistrelli has compiled a 71-44 record. He has led St. Ambrose to those three conference championships and four appearances in the NAIA National playoffs. Magistrelli's teams also get it done in the classroom. Both his 2014 and 2015 teams had the top cumulative GPAs among all NAIA football programs recording over a 3.2 GPA each year

"My goal is to prepare the student-athletes for success on the field, but more importantly for the world that is ahead of them when they leave,” Magistrelli said. “It’s a tremendous honor for me and an awesome responsibility that I enjoy."

The 2020 Tiki Bowl will be Coach Magistrelli's 7th time to coach with us in Hawaii.  Coach Magistrelli is the Event Director of Football Operations for the Hawaii Tiki Bowl.

Kent Kessinger – Ottawa University – Kansas

Kent Kessinger is in his 12th season as the Braves head footbKent Kessinger Picall coach.

In Kessinger’s 12 years has head coach, the Braves have captured four KCAC Championships and has qualified for six straight NAIA Championship Series. He has earned three KCAC Coach of the Year honors, and was named Region 3 Coach of the Year in 2009. Kessinger has coached five AFCA NAIA All-Americans, 26 NAIA All-Americans, 184 All-KCAC performers, four KCAC Players of the Year, one KCAC Offensive Player of the year, two KCAC Defensive Players of the Year, and one KCAC Special Teams Player of the Year.

In 2014 the Braves qualified for their sixth straight NAIA Football Championship Series and won their fourth KCAC Championship in six years. OU had 16 players named to the All-KCAC teams.

AJ Sambol – MidAmerica Nazarene University – KS/MO

AJ Sambol MidAmerica NazareneAJ Sambol was a great addition to the Hawaii Tiki Bowl coaching staff.  His positive attitude and coaching style was a great fit for our organization.  Coach Sambol is the Offensive Line coach at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kansas.

Andy Mitchel – Marian University – Indiana

Andy Mitchell MarianAndy Mitchel is the Associate Head Coach at Marian University in Indianapolis, Indiana.   Andy Mitchel has brought a new style and attitude to the MU offense. In 2018,  Mitchel guided Marian's offense to one of its best seasons in program history. The Knights ranked second in the country in sacks against, second in pass efficiency, fourth in third down conversions, sixth in total offense per game and 15th in rushing offense per game.During his second season in 2015, Mitchell helped the Knights to the program's second national championship behind an offense that posted nearly 42 points per game.

The Hawaii Tiki Bowl is excited to see Coach Mitchel take the field with our high school players.

Vince Fillipp – St. Ambrose University – Iowa

Vincevince_fillipp_111_mfb Fillipp, a former All-American defensive lineman, was named the Defensive Coordinator for St. Ambrose University in 2017.  Prior to his time at St. Ambrose. he spent the previous three seasons as the Defensive/Recruiting Coordinator at Kansas Wesleyan University.

Coach Fillipp brought his intensity and love for the game to the beaches of Hawaii.

Mike Van Diest PicIn 2014 Coach Henninger was named American Football Coaches Association – NAIA National Coach of the Year. His team was national runner-up in 2014 and National Champions in 2015.

Ryan Redd – Georgetown College Kentucky

Ryan Redd is the Defensive Back Coach for the Georgetown College Tigers.  Prior to ryan_redd_Football coachcoming to Georgetown College , Coach Redd was on the staff of the University of Pittsburgh as a Special Teams, Running Backs Assistant and Academic Graduate Assistant Coach.  His expertise on the football field transitions into a Professional School Counselor in College and Career Planning.  We welcome Coach Redd to our staff for the 2020 Hawaii Tiki Bowl.

Bill Reiss – Lackawanna College – Pennsylvania

Bill Reiss LackawannaBill Reiss has been a member of the Lackawanna College football staff since the Spring of 2009.  He is currently serving as the Defensive Coordinator.  During the 2019 campaign, the Falcons Defensive led by Bill Reiss accumulated a top 10 finish in the NJCAA in most statistical categories. The defensive performance helped propel the Falcons to an 11-0 finish, an El Toro Bowl victory, and a #6 ranking in the NJCAA. During his career, he has helped multiple student athletes sign Division 1 Scholarships and has coached multiple NFL players, most recently coaching Kyzir White.

Keith Barefield – Southeastern University – Florida

Coach BarefieldCoach Barefield has been a college football coach for more than 30 years. In 2015, the Southeastern University Fire were 9-2, and cracked the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 for the first time in program history on October 19th. For a second consecutive year, the Fire factored into The Sun Conference championship picture, and continued its reputation as a high-powered offense. SEU averaged 42.4 points per game and put together one of the best rushing attacks in the nation, averaging 217.9 yards per game on the ground. Additionally, the Fire proved to be one of the most proficient offenses in the NAIA, averaging 38.7 points per game, ranking seventh in the NAIA in scoring and ninth in yards per game at 444.2.

Michael Caba – Georgetown College – Kentucky

michael_caba_270_mfbCoach Michael Caba is the Offensive Coordinator at Georgetown College in Kentucky.  He has been a college football coach for 17 years. He joined the Hawaii Tiki Bowl staff in the summer of 2016 and brought enthusiasm and high energy to the coaching staff.  He can also be seen on the surf board in the Waikiki Beach area on occasion.

Todd Hafner – William Penn University – Iowa

Todd Hafner is in his 16th year as head football coach.  Hafner, who earned his 100th todd_hafner_210_mfbcareer win in 2019, guided William Penn to its seventh league crown in school history in 2016.  The team won seven in a row to claim a share, its first since 2012. The 2012 crew finished 9-3 and qualified for the NAIA Football Championship Series, its first playoff appearance since 1976 and second all-time.

We are excited to have Coach Hafner join our staff for the 2020 Hawaii Tiki Bowl.

Sherard Poteete – Trinity Valley Community College – Texas

Sherard_Poteete_12-2017Sherard Poteete is the Head Football Coach at Trinity Valley Commuity College. This past season, the Poteet-led Cardinal offense helped the Cardinals to a fourth straight SWJCFC regular season title, a fifth straight No. 1 seed in the SWJCFC regional playoffs and to the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl for a second straight year and fourth time in five years. Coach Poteete has coached at the NJCAA and NCAA Div 1 levels.

Matt Franzen – Doane College – Nebraska

Matt FranzenMatt Franzen took over the Doane Football program in December 2006. Franzen also serves as the offensive line coach for the Tigers. A native of Lincoln, Franzen graduated from Doane College in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology. He also holds a Masters Degree from Hastings College in Teaching/Physical Education. He earned First Team NAIA All-America honors in 1993 as an offensive lineman.
